Two Separate Cuba-bound Relief Ships Declared Missing following Departing Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost boats transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Rescue Efforts Launched
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, as stated by a official statement.
The ships had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.
Background of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission said.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"The group is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Recent Humanitarian Delivery
Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.
That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and food.
Larger International Climate
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.
The United Nations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of power shortages.
Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from different leaders highlighting the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Responding to previous proposals, a high-ranking government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the boats and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
