The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time served behind bars.

This news came shortly following Sarkozy gained freedom while he contests the guilty verdict related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to obtain political financing linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, implying the account centers around his reflections from isolation rather than extensive analysis on the overcrowded and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where one hears constant sound,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is fortified in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader had appeared by video link from his cell, describing his time inside as draining. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, showing great humanity, easing this difficult experience bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It leaves a mark every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to review and analyze the three books he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, in which a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned but escapes to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in the city. Guards were stationed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed only yoghurts in prison due to concerns any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain daily while he was in prison, informed the court he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “He has faced threats against his life, listened to yells at night and the urgent intervention next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody in late October following the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to acquire election financing during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case planned for early next year.
