The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
