The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
