An informant has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology enabling the Taliban to identify local individuals who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were instructed to relocate and switch their contact details to protect themselves from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a serious breach of confidential data involving nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to relocate to the United Kingdom to flee the regime.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet including their personal data, comprising names, phone numbers and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by an official working at British military command in last year.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when identities of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Militant Technology

Under inquiry about if militant forces possessed advanced decryption, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Initial findings provided to the committee estimated that approximately fifty relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction concerning the incident was enacted in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved where feasible and altered their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban obtained these details, would result in identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

Person A argued that government assessment performed by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

She detailed disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
