Slot Provides No Excuses and Pledges to Find Route Out of Malaise
Arne Slot declared he needed to “look at myself” after Liverpool suffered a 6th loss in 7 Premier League games at home against Forest and insisted he would find a solution from the title holders' poor run.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, produced the biggest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as the Merseyside club slipped to an 8th loss in eleven fixtures in every tournament. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and the home side contended the defender's opener ought to have been disallowed for comparable grounds to the captain's chalked-off goal against City prior to the national team pause. But Slot admitted the responsibility stopped with him and offered no alibis.
“No one wants to hear me now speaking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I should look at my own role first and my team, but it demonstrates you how a goal can alter the momentum of a match. Earlier I was just waiting for us to net a goal. Later we hardly generated anything.
“Naturally there is a path forward, particularly with the quality players we have. No matter if you win or are beaten when you reflect you are always considering: ‘In which areas can we do better, where can we adjust?’ but that is different from doubting yourself.
“I want to emphasise I am accountable for the present losses. You are answerable when you are victorious but also liable when you are losing. I can never provide sufficient reasons for us to have the outcomes we have. That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that.”
The team's display fell apart as the coach introduced several attacking changes when pursuing the match. “It was the same on the road at Forest last season,” he remarked. “I took the French defender off and put on the Portuguese forward and he found the net immediately to make it 1-1. At that time it was courageous, currently it’s probably stupid.”
The Anfield side previously were defeated in back-to-back home Premier League fixtures against Forest in 1963. The last time they suffered back-to-back league games by a 3-0 margin was in 1965.
Slot said: “It was very bad. Playing on home soil, losing 3-0 regardless of which opponent you face is a terrible result. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the game. I did not witness us producing so much in the initial 30 minutes perhaps the whole campaign, and the first time they arrived in our box they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in every other game we have been the controlling side and were capable to create opportunities. Lately it is almost constantly that we fail to convert our opportunities and the attempts we concede go in.”
