A two-month cruise around Australia was terminated following the tragic passing of an older lady who was abandoned by the vessel on a remote island.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the group for a pause. The ship left without her and returned several hours later after the personnel realised the woman was unaccounted for.

An extensive hunt located her body the following day.

Authorities are looking into the event, alongside police and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company announced that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the remainder of the cruise had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and earlier mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that travelers would be given a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also published an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" prohibiting any additional guests from boarding the ship.

The representative said that they would attend the vessel in the port city upon its coming back.

Sequence of Events

The ship initially left Cairns on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the point of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Travelers on board - who usually pay substantial amounts of money to join the expedition - were ferried there for a day trip with the possibility of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "surprised and distressed that the liner left the island after an scheduled excursion without my mother".

Via her announcement, she described her mother as an "active elderly person" who was a member of a walking club.

"Based on limited information we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she mentioned.

She further stated that she hoped the inquiry would be able to identify what "the company should have undertaken that might have protected Mum's being".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and mum fell ill on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"They requested her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the boat departed, reportedly without conducting a passenger count.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, mother passed away, by herself."

Organization Position

Via official communication, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with authorities to assist their examination".

He said that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had provided its full support to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Procedures

The ship caters for up to a hundred twenty passengers with forty-six crew, according to company data. It was specifically designed to access distant regions of the Australian coast and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - compact vessels used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Events like this are infrequent, and cruise ships have protocols to document which passengers are boarding or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] onboard just isn't an possibility," an authority stated.

Cruise lines regard these processes very seriously and have "clever tech in place to stop such occurrences from happening," the authority further stated.

"This is most likely a shocking - and unfortunate - isolated incident."
