New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
