Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
