Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
