American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert went out at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to check with airlines about revised departure times.

The situation precedes the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
