Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
